おんこの話（1） — 島を見守る木

「おんこ」と言えば焼尻、焼尻と言えば「おんこ」。
そんなふうに語られるほど、島のおんこ（イチイ）は広く知られています。
おんこを含む焼尻島の原生林は学術的にも貴重で、今では国の天然記念物に指定されています。

おんこはイチイ科の常緑針葉樹で、学名は Taxus cuspidata。
英語名は Japanese Yew。
和名は「イチイ」ですが、北海道や東北では昔から「おんこ」の名で親しまれてきました。

「イチイ」という名にはいくつかの伝承があります。
そのひとつが、仁徳天皇の時代のエピソードです。
宮中の儀式で用いる笏を全国から集めたところ、
飛騨の国から献上されたイチイの笏は木目の美しさも品格も抜きんでており、
天皇が「木の中の一位（いちい）である」と称した——そんなお話が伝わっています。

おんこには「サクギ」「アララギ」といった別名もありますが、その語源ははっきりしていません。
また「おんこ」という呼び名も東北地方の方言に由来するといわれますが、意味は定かではありません。

厳しい寒さや雪にも耐える強い木でありながら、
その花言葉は「悲哀」と「哀愁」。
静かに佇む姿に、どこか物語を秘めた趣があります。

About the Onko Tree (1) — The Quiet Guardian of the Island

When people say “onko,” many think of Yakishiri Island, and when they think of Yakishiri, “onko” naturally comes to mind.
The island’s onko trees—Japanese yews—grow within a primeval forest so valuable that it has been designated a national natural monument.

The onko is an evergreen conifer in the yew family, known in Latin as Taxus cuspidata,
and in English as the Japanese Yew.
Although its formal Japanese name is ichii, people in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region have long called it onko, a name filled with local warmth.

There are several stories about how the name ichii came to be.
One tale reaches back to the time of Emperor Nintoku.
For an imperial ceremony, ceremonial wands were gathered from across the country.
Among them, a wand made of yew sent from the province of Hida stood out for its elegant grain and refined character.
The emperor, impressed, declared it “the finest among all woods”—and so the name ichii was born.

The tree is also known by other names such as sakugi and araragi, though their origins remain uncertain.
Even the word onko is believed to come from a regional dialect, but its exact meaning has been lost to time.

Despite its strength—thriving in harsh cold and heavy snow—the onko carries the gentle, somewhat wistful flower meanings of “sorrow” and “melancholy.”
There is something in its quiet presence that feels as if it holds an old story deep within.
